I wrote about the Osaka leg of Umriss' Japan tour. I wrote it in Japanese and translated it into English using a translation app. Please excuse any awkwardness. To see the whole event in Japanese, please follow this link →https://derspiegelimspiegel.blogspot.com/2024/11/UMRISS.html
【Umriss】
It's pronounced "umurisu". From Switzerland.
Today I came to see this band.
They appeared second.
I was checking out who was going to be next on Kawabata's show, and it turned out to be a band from Switzerland, so I looked them up on Spotify and thought, "They're so cool!"
They call it a band, but Krish is the one who's doing it.
He asked Mele to perform, and since the date matched with Kawabata's show, they decided to perform on that day (Kawabata says).
After D'ypcys' performance, two Mele staff members brought a computer stand to the center of the stage. Krish put a sheet of paper with the set list next to the computer and took out his bass from its case.
The body of the bass was covered with stickers without any gaps. There was also a sticker of an anime character on the apple logo of the laptop, so I think they'll probably get along well with that kind of thing.
Now, after checking the sound of the bass a little, the live show will start soon.
The first song was "Sanskritisten" from the mini album "Gewasser" released last year.
I think the genre he spins is industrial. A world constructed with low bass sounds and lots of noise.
He plays the bass while singing and operates the computer as the live performance progresses.
The drums and other sounds other than the basic bass were programmed into the computer beforehand. Although he programmed them, he sometimes changes the settings of the bass sound on the computer to skillfully produce sounds other than the usual bass sounds, so I feel that the variety of sounds is actually greater than that of a typical band.
It must take a lot of preparation and practice to do all this alone, and I can imagine that there is even more work to do when performing live in Japan, but I can imagine that he has prepared more for this Japan tour than I could imagine. I am truly grateful, and I truly feel that I am glad that he chose this place and this day.
The second song was "Madeline Kalzit", which is included in the latest single release. It was a song I wanted to hear.
I also wanted to hear another song, "palast," from the same single, live, but maybe that's asking too much. "palast" is 10 minutes long, and there are many songs that are over 7 minutes long, so I was happy just to hear "Madeline Kalzit." He came all the way from Switzerland to play live.
He didn't stop from this song, but he played the short "Ennui in the Port Lillian Metropolitan Region" and went to the MC. He spoke broken but solid Japanese. I was happy, and I could feel his love for Japan and his passion for this Japan tour, and it made me want to try my best in life and not lose.
He introduced himself, saying that there was only one song left.
He called himself a band, but he said, "I don't know if he can call himself that, but we're a band called Umris."
He continued, saying that he only brought stickers and posters as merchandise, but that it's on Spotify and other sites, so please give it a listen.
He also expressed his immense gratitude for having been able to perform and for everyone coming to listen, saying "It's so much fun" and "Super fun" with a big smile on his face.
He said that since he was able to perform in Japan, he wanted to cover his favorite Japanese band, and at the end he sang "Skool Kill" by Gin Nang Boyz in Japanese. He said that he might forget the lyrics because he was nervous, but even if he did forget them, it wouldn't be a problem, because everyone in Mele is sure to be united in his spirit and performance.
The links for each site are as follows
I talked to him a little after the show.
He seems to like Japanese songs, can speak Japanese at a conversational level, and can write hiragana and kanji. I've never met an artist who can speak Japanese to this extent when visiting Japan, so I was so surprised that I couldn't close my mouth. I'll keep my mouth shut though.
He said that Mariko Goto is extremely popular in Switzerland.
He also told me that even artists who are not very famous in Japan are very popular in Switzerland.
I hope he comes to Japan again and performs live. And if I ever go to Switzerland, I'd like to visit him and experience the live houses there.
He told me the set list after the show.
